RODADORA FRONTERA (Border Tumbleweed)

Tornillo, TX

Status: Completed in 2014

Located at the United States Tornillo-Guadalupe U.S. Port of Entry, Rodadora Frontera is a cloud-like form comprised of several irregular tetrahedrons. The structure is a series of standard pipe sections connected with custom-milled stainless steel blocks, each block or "node" being vital to the cluster structure. In total there are 29 unique nodes and 14 unique pipe lengths coupled with 230 standard nodes and 912 standard pipe lengths. Truck mirrors were added to the structure to enhance the cluster-effect as well as to alter the perspectives of each viewer. This project received an AIA Small Projects Award in 2015 for its structural performance, 5-axis machining techniques and artistic presence.
